Grading with the DSLR…

Having been suitably impressed with the raw, unprocessed image quality the Canon Rebel T2i/550D produced (even with the basic 18-55mm kit lens that came with the camera), and equally impressed with the early grading tests we’d performed, we really wanted to see how the captured images would hold up to a more intensive grading process, so we shot another test video, and this time really pushed the boat out with a more stylised colour look. Again, the results didn’t disappoint.

The level of detail the video captures in both the shadow and highlight areas is apparent when manipulating the gamma settings with Curves or Levels in Adobe After Effects (which is our grading and colouring software of choice).

We’ll be running a few more extensive tests (including audio capture) before we commit to using the DSLR as the main camera for a feature project, but so far, it’s certainly looking promising. Stay tuned…
